In this modern era, with every fast-paced moment that we see pass us by, an image has never lost its value. It's with this mentality that I've set my own personal bar for each photo session. Having worked with people, one on one, for the past 16 years, I've grown accustomed to the connection. This, is what my images are all about. Anyone can take a picture and hit the nail on the head every so often. My goal is to meet and exceed your wildest expectations, while forming a bond that lasts much longer than your photo session ever will. Throughout my career, I've worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world - both current and former celebrities - while maintaining a day to day working relationship with everyone from children to students to families. It really doesn't matter to me who I'm working with, because each person is different, bringing with them their own unique characteristics that help to mold the way I shoot my images.
My background in photography started while working backstage with musicians as a hairstylist for many years. As one creative endeavor morphed into another, I found that my true passion didn't involve a pair of scissors in my hands, but instead a camera and lens. Through the music industry connections, I began photographing concerts, in their dingy and low-light scenarios, then I moved towards landscapes after enduring a battle with cancer. The feeling of isolation while out in nature was incredibly therapeutic to me and I started tinkering with self portraits during this stretch, realizing that what I really loved was photographing people and helping to tell their stories, much like I had my own during the aforementioned cancer battle.
Like a lot of people, I bought a camera and figured I could start taking photos of things I liked, hoping that an image would turn out cool for every few shots I took. I never thought I'd fall in love with it like I have. My first DSLR flew out of my bag and broke, causing me to upgrade to a slightly better model. From there, I maxed out the capabilities of that Nikon, sold it, used the money to upgrade again, and by then, I was all in. That camera became my sidekick for the next 2 years before I purchased another with the help of a friend. I purchased lenses, sold lenses, used the money to buy new lenses, and finally figured out what kind of setup I liked as a photographer. Basically, lots of trial and error.
My current setup is a mix of digital and film, with the anchor pieces being Sony and Canon products. I use a Sony A7R II as my main body, a Canon 5D Mk III as my backup, and a Sony A6300 for a lot of video. For my film-like look, I use a Leica M8 and a Leica TL. My favorite lens to use is an 85mm Sigma Art Lens. However, I also love fitting old manual focus film lenses onto my cameras, most notably a Minolta 58mm f/1.2 and a Minolta 85mm f/2. They are by far, my favorite lens to work with, if I've got the right backdrop and subject. For film, I shoot Polaroids of most of my music and wedding subjects, on a 1970’s Polaroid SX-70 Camera and a Leica CL for 35mm prints.
In post, I catalogue and edit my RAW photos in Lightroom and my video in Premiere Pro. Before all of this however, the image has to be captured in camera. I don't rely on a lot of tricks. The most important thing is being ready for any scenario, the lighting changes that accompany any uncontrolled shoot and the many different types of personalities that I am blessed to work with.
