Tuesday night. 6 dudes. A semi-messy apartment.
The television played the World Series game between the Royals and the Mets, but for the first few innings, you'd have never known we were paying any mind to it at all. The conversation between us started to get deep fairly quick, with each of us taking turns chiming in about the issues that we all individually struggle with. As everyone in the room spoke their piece, I began to think about community.
No, not the TV show and definitely not the overused and over hash tagged word that gets far too often spoken when referencing Instagram or other social media outlets. I mean, real, in person, one on one community. The kind that challenges you, inspires you, and helps to pick you up when you're in the middle of falling on your face. As one of the guys spoke about drinking and the troubles it's causing him, each of us surrounding him spoke in line about the safeguards we each have to make when facing our own distractions and issues. He could have found himself at the bar, talking about drinking amongst buddies who were also drinking, but if the issue at hand is also in the company you keep, it was THIS community surrounding him that was breathing real life into his lungs in that moment.
One of the most important things that we can do for ourselves is to find friendships with people that motivate us to be the best that we can be. Similar interests are great, but if those similar interests are dragging you down and causing you to fall when you should be faithful, it might just be time to find a new community. Ironically, for as easy as we'll block someone in the anonymity that the internet allows, we find it hard to cut off people in our real lives. At the end of the day, if the people around you aren't really helping to keep you accountable it's ok to cut chords.
They say that the only person who is going to take care of you, is you, but I don't agree with that. That's a myth and if you believe it, it's time to get new friends. If i'm entrusted to befriend the people in my community, I'm going to help take care of them as well, just like I expect the same out of them, for me. I don't just care about your well being, I care about your soul. That, is community. #UntilWeMeetAgainProject Day 52.
